Tips berkampung dalam Masjidl Haram semasa hari Jumaat

Tips semasa umrah dari sahabat-sahabat yang saya amat-amat hargai ialah "berkampung" dalam Masjidil Haram mulai tengah malam Jumaat.

Mulakan dengan Tawaf Sunat sebelum Subuh Jumaat. rebut peluang Solat Subuh di hadapan Kaabah. Manfaatkan amalan sunat-sunat lain selepas Solat Subuh. Tidak perlu balik hotel. 

Selepas Solat Dhuha boleh menjamu selera di bangunan Hotel Safwa (food court tingkat 7) atau di sebelahnya  Tower Royal Clock All Baik Mall @ Zam-zam Tower (food court tingkat 3).

Satu set makanan (nasi dan roti) boleh kongsi tiga orang. Besar portionya.

Segera kembali ke Masjidil Haram seawal mungkin untuk Kuthbah Jumaat. Guna kemudan tandas sebelum masuk masjid.

Terima kasih lepada ramai yang mengesyorkan saya mencuba juadah di D'salji (milik Felda) di bangunan Hotel Safwa (food court tingkat 7) sebelah Tower Royal Clock All Baik Mall atau lebih dikenali Zam-zam Tower. 

Sebelumnya saya termasuk dan terpergi tingkat 3 Zam-zam Tower yang tidak kurang hebatnya food court di sini.

Bagaimanapun saya terlepas mencuba Roti Canai di D'saji, hanya berpeluang Briayani Kambing dan Ayam

Apabila kata asal diputar-belitkan.

Sepulang dari sawah, Lembu terus terbaring di kandang dengan wajah penat dan nafas yang berat. Lembu berkata pada Anjing yg kebetulan datang berjumpanya : "Anjing, aku sangat penat hari ini. Rasanya esok sehari aku nak berehat.”

Anjing bejumpa Itik di sudut tembok: "Tadi aku berjumpa Lembu, katanya esok dia ingin berehat dulu. Aku rasa sudah sepatutnya, sebab tuan kita bagi kerja yang terlalu berat kepada Lembu."

Itik kemudian bercerita kepada Kambing: "Lembu merunggut tuan kita bagi kerja terlalu banyak dan berat, jadi esok dia tidak mahu kerja."

Kambing berjumpa Ayam: "Khabarnya Lembu tidak seronok bekerja dengan tuan kita lagi."

Ayam pula bercerita kepada Kucing: "Lembu tak mahu bekerja untuk tuan kita lagi dan dia nak bekerja dengan tuan lain."

Ketika makan malam, Kucing memberitahu Peladang: "Tuan, elok tuan ajar si Lembu tu, akhir-akhir ini dia telah berubah. Dia ingin meninggalkan tuan untuk bekerja dengan tuan lain."

Mendengar kata-kata Kucing, Peladang merasa amat marah dan keesokan harinya Peladang menyembelih Lembu.

One day a professor entered the classroom and asked his students to prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin. The professor handed out the question paper, with the text facing down as usual. Once he handed them all out, he asked his students to turn the page and begin. To everyone's surprise, there were no questions....just a black dot in the center of the page. The professor seeing the expression on everyone's face, told them the following:

"I want you to write what you see there."

The students confused, got started on the inexplicable task.

At the end of the class, the professor took all the answer papers and started reading each one of them aloud in front of all the students. All of them with no exceptions, described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc. etc. etc. After all had been read, the classroom silent, the professor began to explain:

"I am not going to grade you on this; I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot - and the same happens in our lives. We have a white paper to observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots. Our life is a gift given to us by ALLAH, with love and care, and we always have reasons to celebrate - nature renewing itself everyday, our friends around us, the job that provides our livelihood, the miracles we see everyday.......

However we insist on focusing only on the dark spots - the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relationship with a family member, the disappointment with a friend, a.s.o.

The dark spots are very small compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds.

Take your eyes away from the black spots in your life. Enjoy each one of your blessings, each moment   life gives you. Be grateful to ALLAH SWT and do appreciate BLESSINGS from ALLAH SWT

Agak-agak adakah yang masih menggunakan unit pengukuran talam ini?

Last night my ex-student sent me an email that said, "Do you prefer life as a manager or as a lecturer? Do you regret your decision to change your career from highly paid position in private sector to so, so paid position in government? I really admirer you dare to change your career at age of 40!”

So, here I am changing my life at exactly 4 months before my age turn 40 on year 2007. I always said that before, I’m going to get the life I always wanted and never had the first 40 years of my life. It’s going to be a long journey but I’m going to do it, I need to do it.

I start my job career at my age of 18 (1986) with various positions and jobs, from part time basis as a contract worker, durian seller, motorsports journalist cum office boy to full-time worker as machine operator, technician and my last two positions are a senior engineer and manager.

I'm university drop-out on 1986 from UM because I spent most of my time in Batu 3, Shah Alam Racing Track. Later after 10 years I come-back to study in Mechanical Engineering, USM from 1995 to 2003. I'm getting my first bachelor degree at age of 35 and a year later I obtained my master degree from UKM. I complete both studies during my employment.

After all these 20 years employment, I told myself, I must change my career. I have to do it for my wife, my son, my parents and most of all to myself.

Please! I’m not tired of living my life the way I have been. It’s just time for change.

I'm not running away from the any places I worked before, Yes, I made a mistake but I'm meeting it head on, taking the steps necessary to make it better, and learning from the mistakes that I made.

Sometimes people think when you dare to change you highly paid career to so, so paid career because you cannot performed your job. You only talk big during interview before people hire you and later just do NATO (No Action, Talk Only!).

Have you ever heard the phrase "those who can, do; those who can't, teach", or its variation, "those who can't do, teach"?

My close friend worked with me nearly 10 years before (currently he is a head of Audit Firm in KL) make some joke about this phrase; “You can’t do, teach. You can’t teach, be an auditor.”

We don’t believe it at all! To us, you can’t do here, you can’t do any where. We were glad we managed to perform our job successfully during our employment before. Later, everywhere he went, good positions offered and highly salaries were showered upon him. Yes, it happens to me too and few more ex-friends where currently worked in petroleum and automobiles companies.

Both of us believe on other phrase; Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.

Yes, we teach everyone those who want to learn! I teach my friends. My friends teach me. Our boss is our great teacher. He teaches us lots and we shared with others. Not only in our job community, we have been appointed by few authorities to teach and guide our neighbouring factories related to our expert knowledge. All these we do it without any charges! But we are proud of what we do.

Frankly speaking, I must admit that I am still missing the year-end news announcement about salary increment and annual bonus, gratuity or other benefits enjoyed by friends from private sectors.

By the way, I’m thankful (and still thankful) to Allah to let me make that important decision in my life to change the career at my age of 40. With my new career as a lecturer I can spent more time for my family, my parents, my PhD study, my social and welfare works and perhaps at the same time to carry out my duty as a real Muslim.

Those that can't do, teach.

Occasionally this saying (or a close variation) pops up in casual conversation. It is a saying of unknown origin which more-or-less suggests that teachers are failures.

The implications of this phrase are many:

if one fails to get a job in their studied skill of interest, the default alternative is to become a teacher of that skill;
a general contempt for teachers;
and that teachers of a trade are inferior to workers in the same trade.

Any professional (in any field) has probably heard this phrase in one variation or another, at one time or another. In the classical music profession, it is usually meant to say that teachers are failed performers.

Teaching is one of the few professions that requires a higher education, yet it is commonly suggested that those who take that career path are inferior in some way. This is mostly untrue of course - a myth perpetuated by misguided cynicism and pessimism.

Teaching is an occupation not only requiring a college degree but also a variety of acquired social, pedagogical and psychological skills. A teacher is required to be any numbers of things at any given moment, including:

a mentor
a counselor
a psychologist
a career counselor
a colleague
a surrogate parent
a fund raiser
an inspirational motivator
an adjudicator
a negotiator

Being a teacher, whether it be a college professor or classroom teacher, requires more than the standard Bachelors degree, but still many view it as a profession for dropouts or people with inferior skills.

A typical "anti-teacher" anecdote is one about incompetence - teachers who teach topics related to professions in which they have never been employed. Of course, strong and weak examples can be found in any profession, whether it be teachers, musicians or politicians.

Yes, the issue of incompetence may occasionally be true but more often, it is not true - or it is an irrelevant argument.

To a skeptic I would suggest this:

If you feel that teachers lack knowledge in what they teach and how that applies to the real world, then you are perhaps missing the point of education. Education is not about memorizing and regurgitating information as needed at a future job.

The teacher's ultimate role is to help students learn how to be smart enough to figure out things on their own - to teach themselves.

A classic quote I use to counter the "those that can't do, teach" quote is from one of the greatest teachers in history, Aristotle.

It is:

Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.

Sebenarnya dulu semuanya telah ada!

(Awal tahun 2000an, ada Menteri Pelajaran mensisipkan topik Persekitaran (environment) dalam mata pelajar sedia ada. Pertengahan 2000an diperkenalkan OSH in School. Tahun lepas diwar-warkan pula subjek Keselamatan Jalan Raya.)

Pertengahan 2008 seorang pelajar politeknik mati terkambus di tapak binaan di Changlung. Semasa aku kerja di beberapa kilang dahulu dan kebetulan hampir semua kilang itu aku ditugaskan menjaga pelajar-pelajar yang buat pratikal ini. Setiap batch pelajar yang buat pratikal ini ada sahaja yang berkemalangan. Kalau tak kemalangan di dalam kilang, mereka akan kemalangan di jalan raya.

Setelah berada di dalam bidang akademik (universiti) ini baru aku sedar, subjek keselamatan (OSH) hanya diajar sebagai elektif (pilihan) dan biasanya hanya diajar pada tahun-tahun terakhir. Manakala pelajar yang akan buat pratikal ada yang menjalaninya sebelum mereka mempelajari su bjek OSH ini.

Politeknik mulai tahun ini khabarnya sudah mula membuat pendekatan baru dengan mewajibkan pelajar-pelajar kejuruteraan mereka menjalani kursus OSH CIDB sebelum menjalani latihan pratikal ini.

Bagaimanapun email yang aku terima pagi tadi menyedarkan aku rupa-rupanya subjek OSH ini telahpun bermula seawal 80an dan mungkin lebih awal dari itu.

Pesanan Orang Lama. Bhg. 2. Macamana nak kuah lebih.

Cucur Udang, 4 ketul RM 1.00. Beli 8 ketul cucur dalam 1 bungkus dapat kuah 1 bungkus. Kalau beli 2 bungkus (dengan 4 ketul cucur 1 bungkus) boleh dapat kuah 2 bungkus!

Ada tauke kedai yang tak berkira pasai kuah-mekuah ini. Ada yang kedekut tahi hidung masin. (Betulkah tahi hidung itu rasanya masin?)

Pernah sekali tu di Pasar Ramadhan Bagan Serai, aku suruh Abang yang jual Roti Jala 3 keping RM 1.50 itu buka balik paper bungkus Roti Jala itu.

Macam ni ceritanya; aku order 6 keping tapi Abang yang jual Roti Jala itu membungkus 6 keping Roti Jala itu dalam 1 bungkus dan bagi sebungkus sahaja Kuah Kari Daging. Aku minta sebungkus lagi Kuah Manis Durian dia tak bagi sebab katanya 1 kuah untuk 1 bungkus sahaja.

Aku tanya balik Abang itu, kalau saya beli 2 bungkus saya akan dapat 2 kuahlah. Ya, jawab Abang itu yang “lurus bendul” entah apa-apa itu.

Jadi aku suruh Abang itu buka balik paper bungkus Roti Jala itu dan buat 2 bungkus. 1 bungkus 3 keping dan 1 bungkus lagi 3 keping.

Abang itu dengan muka masam buka balik paper bungkus Roti Jala berisi 6 keping itu dan membungkus semula dengan 2 bungkus berisi 3 keping setiap bungkus.

Maka dapatlah aku 2 kuah, 1 kuah Kari Daging dan 1 kuah Manis Durian.

Sebenarnya aruah Mejar Adnan pernah berpesan kepada aku. Kalau nak beli bungkus bawa balik makan kat rumah Roti Canai, Roti Kirai (nama lain untuk Roti Jala), Cucur Udang dan makanan-makanan seumpamanya yang bercecah kuah, dan nak dapatkan kuah yang banyak, beli sahaja dalam banyak bungkus.

Ini samalah juga kalau makan di kedai. Elakkan minta menu yang sama. Sebagai contoh kalau 4 orang makan jangan order Nasi Goreng yang sama untuk keempat-empat orang. Tauke kedai atau tukang masak ini biasanya menge-ekonomi-kan bahan mentahnya. Kalau biasanya dia goreng nasi untuk sepinggan bubuh 1 biji telur, kalau dia goreng nasi untuk 4 pinggan mungkin dia bubuh 2 atau 3 biji telur sahaja!

Ingat pesanan orang lama ini.

Order cendol dulu baru minta pulut

Antara ramai “orang lama” atau “senior citizen” yang menurunkan ilmu kepada aku ialah aruah Mejar Adnan semasa sama-sama bekerja di kilang tayar di Kamunting. Agak rapat hubungan aku dengannya walaupun pernah beberapa kali berbalah dan mungkin juga aku pernah menyakitkan hatinya.

Aruah ialah bekas Quarter Master atau QM di kem tentera di Kamunting. Sebagai QM, beliau berpengetahuan luas mengenai pelbagai perkara di Taiping termasuklah hal-hal berkaitan logistik, sumber manusia dan sebagainya.

Banyak ”ilmu” dan ”petua” yang diturunkan kepadanya aku. Ilmu dan petua ini pelbagai; yang berat dan yang ringan. Untuk posting kali ini aku ingin berkongsi petua ”minum cendol pulut dengan berbaloi!”.

Kalau hendak minum cendol tambah pulut, biasanya kami pergi Ansari di Taiping. Di Ansari pulutnya berbungkus daun pisang dan dibakar. Pulut untuk cendol lain di Taiping dan Kamunting hanya dikukus.

Petua aruah ialah semasa order cendol jangan terus minta pulut. Bila cendol sampai baru minta pulut. Kalau terus minta pulut masa order cendol, isi pulut itu akan mengurangkan isi cendol!
